New quality productive forces took the spotlight during the national "two sessions" this year. With disruptive breakthrough in technology, innovative allocation of productive factors, and leapfrog upgrade of industries, advanced productive forces for the new era are gathering in the torrent of progress and development.

I. What are new quality productive forces?

The concept of new quality productive forces was first put forward during a meeting on promoting the full revitalization of northeast China in September 2023, and the tasks are to "consolidate sci-tech innovation resources, drive the development of strategic emerging industries and future industries, and form quickly new quality productive forces; earnestly foster new energy, new materials, advanced manufacture, electronic information and other strategic emerging industries; eagerly cultivate future industries to build new quality productive forces and to add new impetus to development". As indicated in the definition, new quality productive forces represent new technologies, create new value, suit new industries, and forge new impetus, and so far as the constituents concerned it is imperial to promote strategic emerging industries, and actively develop future industries.

As is pointed out in the 14th Five-Year Plan, "China will focus on the new generation of information technology, biotechnology, new energy, new materials, high-end equipment, new energy vehicles, environmental protection, aerospace, marine equipment, and other emerging industries of strategic importance, and accelerate the innovation and application of core technologies in key fields to enhance the country's capacity of ensuring supply of productive factors and foster new drivers for industrial development."

II. Fostering new quality productive forces is a process of repeated zero-to-one jumps

To cultivate and develop new quality productive forces, we must move more original, disruptive sci-tech achievements from bookstores to department stores and from laboratories to factories.

Since 2017 when it commenced to plan the fabrication of nickel products, Lygend Resources has mastered RKEF, HPAL and all other nickel production processes, and has applied mature metallurgical technologies on production lines in Indonesia to boost the development of the NEV and iron and steel industries.

In HPAL, the company's HPAL project in Indonesia is technologically one of the most advanced nickel-cobalt compound HPAL project in the world, as well as the nickel-cobalt compound production project with the lowest out-of-pocket cost across the globe. It has made the records of the lowest investment per MMT output of nickel, the shortest construction period for additional production capacity, and the least time to reach the designed production capacity.

During the project construction, Lygend Resources solved by patented technology the inevitable emission of chromium (VI) compounds in HPAL process, blazing a trail for all HPAL projects in the world.

Lygend Indonesia OBI Nickel-cobalt Project is a Zhejiang B&R key development project, as well as a project that mass-produces for the first time in the history of Indonesia mixed hydroxide of nickel and cobalt (MHP) and battery-grade nickel sulfate for NEV batteries, a milestone in the Indonesian new energy industry.

In RKEF, Lygend Resources has completed its business deployment at home and abroad. By technological innovation, it has improved thermal utilization, and has been the first to build high-positioned drying kilns, reducing production costs and energy consumption, and leading the industry in the utilization of production capacity.

Meanwhile, Lygend Resources has participated in the 14th FYP state key research program of "strategic mineral resources exploitation and utilization" to crack the "critical technology for nickel-cobalt-scandium clean extraction and efficient utilization", reflecting, again, the technological strength of Lygend Resources in HPAL process of laterite nickel ores, and its development philosophy of clean extraction and efficient utilization of resources, and earnestly echoing the call of carbon peak and carbon neutrality.

While zero-to-one represents the first breakthrough in sci-tech innovation, converting technological achievements into productive forces to boost industrial transition and upgrade can be best described as an evolutionary process from one to infinity.

At present, HPAL project phase I (two MHP lines), and phase II (one MHP line) have attained and exceeded the designed production capacity, and the nickel sulfate project for refining mixed hydroxide of nickel and cobalt (MHP) was commissioned in March 2023. In RKEF, Lygend Resources runs three internationally mainstream RKEF lines in Suqian factory, China, which can produce 18,000 MMT of HJF annually. With OBI RKEF project (phase I), all eight production lines are commissioned. In the future, HPAL project (phase III) and RKEF project (phase II) will be put into operation, and the annual production capacity of nickel of OBI industrial park will reach 400,000 MMT.

III. Lygend Resources speeds up nickel business development, persists in breakthrough and innovation to build new quality productive forces

Technological innovation is the core path to new quality productive forces, and intellectual property is the essence of innovation, sci-tech innovation in particular. As spiritual products of the highest value in the innovation chain and industrial chain, intellectual property plays an active, efficient, and practical role in the productivity system. It empowers and integrates other productive factors, amplifies results, and serves as a critical element.

Research and development and investment in technologies have always been a priority with Lygend Resources. Since the launch of OBI nickel-cobalt project, it has practiced bold innovation, scientific experiment, and adequate argumentation, and successfully developed and applied a series of new processes, new equipment, and new materials, laying a firm foundation for the smooth construction of the project and the quick attainment of the designed production capacity.

The repeated breakthroughs of Lygend Resources in metallurgical technologies originate in the continuous technological innovation by its R&D team. In 2023, the company submitted nearly 30 patent applications, mostly invention patents. Up to date, the company holds more than 100 patents, and has set up a technological center and a specialist committee, which will be a sound foundation for further innovation and technological research in the future.

Meanwhile, Lygend Resources implements a patent strategy and has created a high-value patent portfolio: formulate a patent application and protection policy, and prepare to apply for patent for core technologies at the R&D stage to form a "1+N" patent combination; apply for patents in foreign countries and let patents go overseas.

To keep up with the step of the time, the nickel industry must undergo smart, green, high-end transformation. Innovation and breakthrough in critical processes and technologies is a core competitive edge in nickel production. Higher production quality and efficiency are the basis on which Lygend Resources may continuously enlarge its market share, as well as a booster to the company's business growth.

As its nickel projects expand their production capacity smoothly as scheduled, and the optimization and innovation of critical production technologies and processes continue, Lygend Resources is sure to achieve nickel business growth both in quality and in scale.
